Thirty-two-year-old Ms. Zhu Xia cries, laughs, and often bangs on doors and windows madly. She soils her clothing uncontrollably, and has frequent hallucinations, tossing and turning restlessly amidst unseen enemies.

Family members described 32-year-old Zhu Xia was “healthy and vibrant” before untold torture and rape in police custody made her suffer a mental breakdown.

A Fifth Dimension and More
By Yi Fu for Clearwisdom.net

Professor Lisa Randall, a theoretical physicist at Harvard, said that during one of her nuclear fission experiments she found, to her surprise, that some of the particles suddenly disappeared. She boldly hypothesized that these particles suddenly vanished without any trace because they had flown into “a fifth dimension” invisible to humans.

The Empire of Lies

The Empire of Lies: The twenty-first century will not belong to China
by: Guy Sorman, City Journal

The Western press is full of stories these days on China’s arrival as a superpower, some even heralding, or warning, that the future may belong to her. Western political and business delegations stream into Beijing, confident of China’s economy, which continues to grow rapidly. Investment pours in. Crowning China’s new status, Beijing will host the 2008 Summer Olympics.

But China’s success is, at least in part, a mirage. True, 200 million of her subjects, fortunate to be working for an expanding global market, increasingly enjoy a middle-class standard of living. The remaining 1 billion, however, remain among the poorest and most exploited people in the world, lacking even minimal rights and public services.

Press Controls Feed China’s Food Problem
OCTOBER 7, 2008
By DAVID BANDURSKI | FROM TODAY’S WALL STREET JOURNAL ASIA

Nearly three weeks after China’s melamine-tainted milk powder scandal first came to light, Beijing is scrambling to assure the public nothing like this will ever happen again. Yet the Communist Party’s insistence on maintaining press controls still presents a significant stumbling block to addressing China’s quality control problems. Greater press freedom is not on its own a solution to product safety problems in China, but it has to be a component of any strategy to deal with the issue. Free media could help keep companies and regulators honest, expose lapses, and provide the public with critical updates on safety problems — especially in a nation like China, where rule of law is still a long time coming.

BAILOUT NATION:
Truth AND Consequences

Introduction

“The $700 billion bailout package will only prolong economic woes. History shows these plans don’t work. What does work is to let the market clean itself out.” -Jim Rogers

After two weeks of fear-mongering, political debate and frantic deal-making Congress passed the biggest bailout in American history — amounting to another $17,000 of potential debt per U.S. household — while setting a dangerous precedent for further government intrusion into free markets.

Investment Scam in China Leaves Thousands Duped
Reported by: Wang Jinghua, Tian Ling, Xiao Hong

Sep 17, 2008

Protests continue to brew in Jishou City over a billion-dollar investment scam that has left at least 200,000 people angry and penniless.

According to the locals the companies, which included real estate enterprises or private financial institutions, cheated the public of at least 10 billion RMB (US$1.5 billion).

Over 30 companies are believed to have set up dodgy investment schemes in the region. None had full financial backing from established banks, which made repayments virtually impossible.

“These real estate companies cannot get loans from banks, but they need funds in order to operate, so they began to seek funds from the people. The government allowed them to do so at the time,” said one local resident to The Epoch Times.

How China Is Silencing Falun Gong
by Leeshai Lemish, National Post
Published: Tuesday, October 07, 2008

The Olympics are over, but don’t look away from China just yet. The
fates of thousands of ordinary Chinese arrested ahead of the Games hinge
on what we do this autumn.

For people like my Chinese-American friend Si Yang, these roundups have
struck too close to home. In April, Si called his parents in Hebei
province only to discover that 20 officers had shown up and taken away
his father and sister.
